Update your feed to point to www.wssguy.com/blogs/dan

My blog has moved to www.wssguy.com/blogs/dan.  It has not disappeared.  As a matter of fact, I plan on blogging more than ever before.  I had taken quite a break from blogging over the last few months but it was mainly due to me being inundated with project work at my current client.  That work has slowed down somewhat, deliverables have been or are being delivered so I am now able to dedicate some time to doing what I really love, and that is sharing my experiences in and around SharePoint as a development platform with the community as a whole.

The feed url remains the same: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Attis

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank both Brendon and Matt for graciously supplying me with this space over the last few years.  It was here that my blogging life actually began.  I don't expect this site to be taken down or to go away anytime soon, but if it does I am sure I will be given the opportunity to move my content off to my new blog, which I plan on doing over time anyways as time permits.

Stop the Insanity!

So I was trying to install some software for the fingerprint reader on my laptop, which is running Vista x64, and I got this error.

EMBASSY

I have say, this is right up there in the list of strangest errors I have ever seen.  Needless to say, the software did not install.

Spammers be gone, the email commeth and login I can

I'm sure many have you may have noticed the large volumes of spam residing within many of the posts on this blog.  Well, thanks to Brendon's hard work all weekend, not only do we have a new server, but email is also working, and most importantly, I can login to my own blog and maintain it.  With all that said, I plan on enabling moderation on all posts to help control spammers (they aren't going away), as well as doing my best to approve valid comments within 24-48 hours depending on my workload.

I am looking forward to much more frequent posts as well as great content in the next few weeks!  Also, please be patient as I muddle with the skin :)

Visual Studio 2008 Loadfest / Halo Fragfest / Guitar Hero Rockfest!

For those of you in Atlanta or the surrounding area, we (the Atlanta Microsoft Professionals, Atlanta .NET User Group and Microsoft (aka Doug Turnure)) will be hosting a Visual Studio 2008 Loadfest, followed by a Halo Fragfest / Guitar Hero Rockfest in place of the regularly scheduled "talks".  All the fun (and loading) will be happening at the Microsoft Greater Southeast District office in Alpharetta on Monday, December 3rd beginning around 6 PM or so.

Be sure to bring your laptops!  The first 150 people to arrive get a FREE copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional.  Yes, we know it's not out yet, but trust us, you will get a pretty boxed copy (when it does come out).

The gaming facilities will include 9 very large TV's with 9 XBox 360 Elites each with four controllers.  Can you say "Holy Crap Batman, I'm there!"  Bringing your own guitar is optional!

Having an accurate count of attendees would be extremely helpful so please register here if you plan on attending.

See you then!

Technical Interview Tips

Keith Rome, an über smart friend of mine and fellow MVP, recently posted some interview tips on how to increase the odds of landing that next dream job.  Remember, it's the little things that help!

I'm an MVP now!

I am very happy and humbled to say that Microsoft has chosen to award me an MVP for Windows Server - Windows SharePoint Services.  I'll take this chance to thank some of the people who have helped me over the years, including Stacy Draper, Matt Ranlett, Keith Rome, Brendon Schwartz, Jim Wooley and last but not least by any stretch of the imagination, Doug Turnure.  Without these people and any others I may have not mentioned (not on purpose), I may not be blogging this post today!

Thanks everyone and here's to a great year ahead!

Wandering In Seattle

I came to Seattle last week to visit the home office of my new employer.  I have attended a presentation on the MSFT campus and have had a great time meeting lots of new people.  I have been meeting a couple of clients and as it turns out my presence was needed at one (here in Seattle).  My hotel is here.

It's raining and I am bored.  Any ideas much appreciated.

So, where has Dan been?

As if anyone noticed :).

I have been quite busy the last month or so, hence the lack of posts.  To make a long story short, I have switched employers.  After one and a half years at Intellinet I have chosen to move one and now call Slalom Consulting home.  My experience at Intellinet was awesome.  I got to work on a lot of great projects, almost all SharePoint, both 2003 and 2007.  I met some great people and developed some outstanding relationships while there.  I will miss many of the friends I have made there but intend to keep in touch on both a professional and personal level with most if not all of them.

The opportunity I have at Slalom is a ground floor opportunity for the Atlanta office of a national consulting firm.  I will be helping to build a Portals practice locally, with "no travel".  I am extremely excited about it and can't wait to get started (even though I started last Monday).

Right now I am in Seattle (corporate office) meeting a lot of the people that I will be working with moving forward.  Oh I forgot to mention, Brendon and I are now working together.  How lucky (or unlucky, you decide) can I guy get?

The Tragically Hip - Atlanta - March 13th, 2007

Tonight Jody and I went out for a very rare and hard to come by date night.  The occasion you may ask was to see The Tragically Hip concert at the Roxy theatre.  We are both HUGE Hip fans and go see them each and every time they come to Atlanta, which is pretty much every other year or so.  The best part about the shows in Atlanta are the venues.  For those who don't know, the Roxy is not very big, I'm guessing that there were less than 1000 people there, plus half of the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team (I wonder why that is).  We got there just in time to completely miss the opening act, since we weren't interested, plus Lily (our daughter) was being stubborn with respect to going to bed tonight.  We were paying for our beer at the bar as the concert started.  It wasn't very long, lasting only about 2 hours.

It really is neat seeing so many Canadians all in one place.  Flags were waving and it was quite a sight, since to me, this band really reminds me of my roots.  I of course made the traditional phone calls to many people while I was there, holding up the phone and letting people listen.

On our way out, we walked by the sound guy and my eye caught his set list and I pointed it out to Jody.  She asked me if I wanted it and I said sure, so she went and asked him for it with a big smile on her face, and of course, since no one can really say no to her smile, she got it.

Here it is if anyone is interested!

Now off to bed to try and get some sleep!  I still have to work in the morning.

Can you break 500 boards in 5 minutes?

Three weeks ago, I posted about the fact that it has been ten years since I quit smoking.  I explained that I had a made a 250 dollar bet with an old friend as incentive.  This is that friend.  It's 10 minutes long but worth every second, and all proceeds went to charity.

Meat on a Stick? - Yum!

My family and I were out wandering around on Saturday looking for a place to eat lunch.  We were driving down Mansell Road in Alpharetta and Jody said "How about some meat on a stick?"  I said, "Meat on a stick?"  That sounded way too good.  Meat on a stick.  I love meat, what better way to eat meat than on a stick.  But then I thought, where on earth can we get meat on a stick.  Just then Jody turned into a strip mall and parked in from of Justix.  This restaurant literally serves meat on a stick.  Plus, their sides are healthy sides, like steamed broccoli, rice, those types of things, no greasy fries.  I highly recommend this restaurant and advise you all to keep an eye out for it at some upcoming local community developer events.

10 Year Anniversary

Just a small note that today, November 28th, 2006, is my 10 year anniversary as a non-smoker.  Hard to believe that 10 short years ago, I made a 250 dollar bet with a pal in my home town (Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada) to quit smoking and have never looked back.  I quit cold turkey, which after 12 years of smoking, apparently was easier for me than it is for others.  Well, at least I can breathe easier, literally.
