    Microsoft Office 2007

OneNote should be your ultimate Office tool

I love OneNote.  I use it all the time.  I used to have a tablet and I used to be able to do things like draw my diagrams and stuff, but I've actually increased my use of OneNote since I got rid of the tablet.  It's just such a powerful application.  I've been pinged by several people today about OneNote and my fan-dom so I'm pumping it up a bit more with this blog post.

Did you know that you can do the following with OneNote:

    • grab a snippet of a screen just like with SnagIt
    • put an image into OneNote and have it index the text inside of the image so that you can search for it
    • record audio during a conversation and take written notes which are tagged with audio markers so you can replay bits of the conversation based on what you were writing, or replay the entire conversation and have your notes highlighted as the recording covers what was being said as you wrote the notes
    • share OneNote notebooks with your friends in a collaboration love-fest
    • export OneNote content as PDF or HTML for broad distribution

You should be using OneNote.  Learn more by watching this video from Channel 8.  Warning - it is a bit education focused (hence inclusion on Channel 8) but the content is fantastic.

Custom SharePoint List-based Membership and Roles Provider

I've finally finished (almost) with the project that has been keeping me up late at night.  I want to thank Doug Ware, Brendon Schwartz, Dan Attis, and Adam Buenz for all the help they gave me over the past several months while I struggled to bring this beast to its knees.

I did some cool work so I thought I'd post it online.  Look for this to be the focus of several upcoming blog posts and eventually a white paper of some sort or other.

I sought out and received permission from my employer, Intellinet, and my client, Preparis, to post this code online in its entirety.

CodePlex banner Here is the code - http://www.codeplex.com/SPListMP

I've created a custom membership and role provider for SharePoint, which uses a SharePoint list as the backing store for users.  This gives me a couple of neat benefits:

    1. I've got totally discrete user stores despite the fact that potentially dozens of site collections are on the same server.  This means I can back up my users along with my site!
    2. I've got familiar and easy to use list management tools to maintain my users and my roles
    3. I've got the ability to do cool custom code based on my custom roles, including the ability to have custom welcome pages for each user role (ok, so this isn't restricted to my custom providers, but it's cool nonetheless)

I'm excited about this, and I plan to work on the code a lot as time goes on to get it right.  The code works now, but there are elements I'm not that proud of as I was forced to make cuts to get it done and out the door.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 - RTM

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007As illustrated in this post from the SharePoint team, the upgrade from the 180 day trial versions of MOSS 2007 Standard and MOSS2007 Enterprise to the full versions is as simple as changing a license key number through the user interface.

Join us!The fine folks on the Atlanta Microsoft Professionals leadership committee decided to cancel the SharePoint 1, 2, 3! Level 300 seminar and hands on lab, originally scheduled for September 18th and 19th.

However, not wanting to leave you with a single free Monday evening, they have decided to replace the exploration of SharePoint 2003 advanced development topics with an exploration of SharePoint 2007!

We’re talking Loadfest here folks!  We’ll be giving you a DVD with a virtual PC on it.  We’ll be giving you all the sofware you need to install SharePoint 2007 beta 2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, and Microsoft Office 2007 beta 2.  We’ll help you get all of this software set up and running correctly so that you can play with some of the great new features inside the Microsoft Office 2007 suite.

Please plan on bringing your laptops with you to the Microsoft offices on Monday, September 18th.
